A Blessing from a Prisoner

January 25, 2011

May you be happy, may you be free.
May you enjoy at least half as much of happiness
as I have suffered misery.
Farewell! and do not mourn for me.
We ought to mourn not for those who are gone,
but for those who are left behind.
Love each other, live virtuously, and you will be happy inwardly,
and your death will be as light to you as mine is to me.

– from “The Last Days of Simon Konarski” by Lucian Siemienski, published in The United States magazine and Democratic Review, Volume 13, 1843.
