Blessing for a Birthday

February 20, 2011

Your tenth birthday has arrived. May it be a happy one,
and on each returning birthday may you feel new strength
and resolution to be gentle with sisters, obedient to parents,
loving to everyone, and happy in yourself.

I give you the pencil case I promised, for I have observed
that you are fond of writing, and wish to encourange
the habit.

Go on trying, dear, and each day it will be easier to be
and do good. You must help yourself, for the cause of your
little troubles is in yourself, and only patience and
courage will make you what mother prays to see you:
her good and happy girl.

– Abigail May Alcott to her daughter, Louisa May Alcott, November 1842.
Louisa would go on to author the classic Little Women.

[Note from the editor: If you would like give someone a blessing on their birthday,
considering an act of giving to organizations like Birthday Blessing, Inc.,
a non-profit organization based in theWashington, D.C. area that provides birthday
presents to underprivileged children.]
