De-lusory Information

August 8, 2011

The overwhelming complexity of our contemporary situation isn’t illusory. De-lusory is a better word. Information that we gather from all over the world comes to us virtually instantaneously. That’s almost intoxicating, because it suggests that, potentially, we can know about whatever is going on in the world. In point of fact, the kind of information that we get on the news, regardless of the channel, the bandwidth on that news, is very narrow. People are manipulated, in most skillful manipulation, [where] they don’t even know they are being manipulated. By manipulated, I mean, that they are invited and enticed to do things against their own interests.

– Rev. Dr. Allen Callahan, in Crisis of Faith, a film by Four Seasons Productions.

I loved everything he had to say on the series. He was my favored interviewee.
