Home is Where We’re Headed

October 31, 2011

At the piano, Maybredth begins to tap out the opening bars of the hopeful Vetter anthem and Nick comes in half a beat after I think he will, churning out a kaleidoscope of sound. He’s playing the melody straight but the delivery is couched with unexpected little rests. It’s not enough to mess with the arrangement, just enough to keep my ears working to make sense of what I’m hearing and my mind reeling with patterns I’ve yet to comprehend.

I soak up the lyrics I’ve been hearing since I was a little girl, the sound of Nick singing like a feather slicing open the darkness. Vetter is almost as much a home to me as Heathcoat, but as I listen to Nick tease out the final notes of an homage that climbs just a bit as it reaches the end, I realize there must be more to home than I understood before. When something so familiar takes on such a different color, one that feels so new and yet so resonant all at once, it occurs to me that home is where we’re headed, not where we’ve been.
