Joyful song of the whales

November 24, 2011

A thousand different sounds, each one individually audible to the human ear. The timbre, the volume and the frequency present an almost infinite variety…truly polyphonic, an ensemble of voices…. A few of the men aboard the Curlew were of the opinion that the whales might be making noise for the sheer joy of making noise. And yet, not even the birds sing entirely without reason.

– Jacques-Yves Cousteau in The Whale, Mighty Monarch of the Sea as quoted in One-Hundred Cranes: Praying with the Chorus of Creation by William J. Fitzgerald

It was the praying with the salmon that I remember best from this book. Thank you, Shawn.
