Easter Blessing

April 24, 2011

Too many Christians are not free
because they submit to the domination of other people’s ideas.
They submit passively to the opinions of the crowd,
and run along with the crowd –
even when it turns into a lynch mob.
They are afraid of the aloneness,
the moral nakedness,
which they would feel apart from the crowd.
But the Christian in whom Christ is risen
dares to think and act differently from the crowd.

May Christ be risen in you.

– adapted from a passage in He is Risen┬áby Thomas Merton

If you want to be spiritual, then,
may you first of all live your life.
May you not fear the responsibilities
and the inevitable distractions of the work
appointed for you by the will of God.
May you embrace reality and thus find yourself
immersed in the life-giving will and wisdom of God
which surrounds you everywhere.

– adapted from a passage in Thoughts in Solitude, by Thomas Merton, 1956.
